STEAMfest is much more than just a one-day event. Similar to a traditional science fair, an important part of STEAMfest is the creativity, exploration and effort students put in to projects that they make ahead of time to bring to the event.

Unlike a traditional science fair, in which everyone produces a science experiement using the scientific method, STEAMfest offers many kinds of projects to choose from. You can shape your own goal for your project. You bring it to STEAMfest to show off and test with your peers. There are no repeated presentations, judges and points, just conversations with peers and mentors. When your register for your project we will locate a mentor from the community for you.

There is a $5 registration fee for each Make-Ahead Challenge. (STEAMfest is for everyone -- choose "hardship waiver" to remove the fee if needed.) Your $5 fee makes you feel invested in your project, prompts parents to be involved with your choice, and encourages you to focus on just 1 or 2 projects (and protects us all from the dissapointment of “sign-up and forget" syndrome!). You must submit a separate registration for each project to reserve your spot. Depending on your selection, materials may be delivered to your school for pick up.

Maybe you're the type that wants to do it all, but don't forget! You will need to take time before STEAMfest to explore, change your mind, solve problems, and generally enjoy make your project(s) amazing! Plus there will be A LOT to do right at STEAMfest... It's OK to save something for next year!

Now, just scroll down (...and down and down) to see all your Make-Ahead Challenge options. Make your's a project like no other! Then show it off to your peers and the STEAMfest crowd, get some feedback, and maybe make a few tweaks. (Science is all about tweaking!)

MAKE-AHEAD CHALLENGE OPTIONS

Classic! This is the real deal, perhaps the most involved Make-Ahead Challenge, best for those students who are ready to sweat a little for the sake of making a STEAMfest discovery! You can do this -- Pushing into the great unknown is simply a step-by-step process, but each step takes time and is essential to your success. (Some students may prefer to choose the more flexible Science Demonstration or Research Display projects.)

For your Science Experiment, you will need to follow the Scientific Method:
1. Ask a testable question that you don’t already know the answer to, and
2. Research the topic, then
3. Make a hypothesis or guess based on the research, then
4. Design the investigation, including how you will observe and record your data, then
5. Conduct your experiment and collect data as planned, then
6. Try to make sense of the data and draw a conclusion, and finally
7.Present your findings at STEAMfest: Your display should show each step of the scientific method and should include informative visuals, your recordkeeping  and observations, and/or the experiment itself.

You will receive an experiment guide and a STEAMfest display board kit to help you make your best impression. At STEAMfest, you'll spend about 45 minutes in the Display Area (10-10:45 am), proudly presenting your project to a Mentor who knows your topic area and to few peers with similar interests, and then check out their presentations too! No "judging" or "scores," just great conversations, questions, ideas and encouragement. Then your display stays up for all to see, while you are free to enjoy the rest of STEAMfest!

Perhaps you already know the outcome of a process or experiment, but you'll have lots of fun repeating it (for example, making a baking soda and vinegar volcano). You should understand and explain the science behind the demonstration. The display should include extensive visuals and/or the experiment itself.

Pick a STEAM related topic that you love and become an expert! Read, look, watch, think, ask grow-ups, do, organize and categorize your facts and details, and then show us everything you know, and why we should love your favorite thing too!

Also known as "Learning by Breaking Stuff." You investigate the technological principles of a device, through analysis of its structure, function, and operation. What’s the best way to analyze how something works? Take it apart, of course!

1. Locate a mechanical or electronic product (example: toaster), then
2. GET PERMISSION AND HELP FROM YOUR ADULT! And
3. Disassemble the product; mount and label all components, then
4. Provide a written/illustrated description of the operation and function of all components, and
5. Describe how the product is used, who uses it and how you might improve it.

Think it up, and then …

1. Give your new baby invention a name! Then...
2. Label a drawing showing at least two viewpoints of your invention, then...
3. Make a model (It doesn’t have to be actual size: if your invention is actually really tiny make it big enough that we can see the details; if it’s actually really huge, PLEASE scale it down to fit on the table! Then...
4. Provide a written description or video of your invention’s details: What would it be made of, and why? How would it be made? How is your invention used? Why would it would be beneficial? TIP: An eye-catching advertisement or commercial can show off all the information that makes your invention great… Don’t forget to tell us how much it costs so we can start saving up!
